We recently detailed a Guards Red 1989 Carrera 3.2 for a client in Aventura. The car had been garage-kept for most of its life, driven on weekends, and maintained mechanically — but the exterior and interior hadn't seen a proper detail in years. The owner wanted it brought back to show-ready condition without any modifications. No coatings, no modern products that would change the character. Just a deep, correct restoration detail.

The Paint Where everything changes

Single-Stage Paint — No Room for Error

The first thing we do on any classic Porsche is determine whether the paint is single-stage or base coat/clear coat. This changes everything about how we wash, decontaminate, polish, and protect the car.

Single-stage paint has the color and the protective finish combined into one layer. There is no separate clear coat on top. The color itself is the final surface. That means every time you polish, you're removing color — not a sacrificial clear layer. Go too aggressive with a machine polisher or use a compound that's too abrasive, and you cut through the color and expose primer.

By 1989, Porsche was transitioning to base coat/clear coat on many colors, but not all. Some Guards Red cars from this year came with single-stage paint. The only way to know for sure is to test: we polish a small, inconspicuous area (inside the door jamb or under the rear spoiler) with a white pad. If the pad picks up color, it's single-stage. If the pad stays clean and only picks up clear, it's base/clear.

This particular car was single-stage. That immediately changed our approach for the entire exterior.

What changes with single-stage paint

Washing: Even more gentle than normal. No aggressive scrubbing, no stiff brushes. The paint surface is softer than modern clear coats and scratches more easily.

Clay bar: We use a fine-grade clay with heavy lubrication and extremely light pressure. Aggressive claying can pull pigment from single-stage paint.

Polishing: One-step correction only. We use a finishing polish with a soft foam pad — never a cutting compound. The goal is to refine the surface and remove oxidation without removing excessive color. We check the pad constantly — if it's saturated with red pigment, we're cutting too deep.

Protection: Carnauba wax only — no synthetic sealants, no ceramic coatings. Single-stage paint breathes. Sealing it with a modern synthetic can trap moisture underneath and cause hazing or discoloration over time. A quality carnauba wax protects the surface, deepens the color, and lets the paint breathe naturally.

"On a modern car, we polish through a sacrificial clear coat. On a single-stage Porsche, we're polishing through the actual color. Every pass removes paint that can never be put back."

The result was worth the caution. After removing a thin layer of oxidation with the finishing polish and applying two coats of carnauba, the Guards Red went from chalky and faded to the deep, wet, glossy red that Porsche is known for. Single-stage paint, when properly polished, produces a warmth and depth that modern base/clear coats can't match. The color isn't sitting under glass — it is the surface. Light hits it differently.


The Wheels The signature detail

Detailing the Fuchs

The Fuchs wheel is the most iconic wheel in automotive history. The 5-spoke forged aluminum design with polished lips and painted centers has been on 911s since 1966. On a 1989 Carrera 3.2, the factory Fuchs are 16-inch — 6 inches wide in front, 8 inches in the rear. This car still had its original set.

Fuchs wheels cannot be cleaned the same way as modern alloy or chrome wheels. The wheel has two distinct surfaces — a machined, polished aluminum lip and a painted center — and each surface needs a completely different approach.

What you absolutely cannot use

No acid-based wheel cleaners. No caustic degreasers. No harsh alkaline products. Acid etches into bare aluminum instantly. Most off-the-shelf wheel cleaners — including the purple iron-reactive sprays we use on modern wheels — are formulated for clear-coated alloys and will damage an uncoated Fuchs lip in minutes. The polished aluminum on a Fuchs wheel has no protective coating. It's raw metal with a machine-finish surface. Acid hits it and you get permanent white staining and pitting that can only be fixed by re-machining the wheel.

This is the most common mistake detailers make on classic Porsches. They spray the same iron remover they use on every other car. The painted center section is fine — but the polished lip turns white and cloudy within 60 seconds. We've seen Fuchs wheels ruined by a single cleaning at a regular detail shop. It's irreversible without machine refinishing.

How we actually clean them

We clean each Fuchs wheel in three stages:

Stage 1: The painted centers. We use a pH-neutral wheel cleaner sprayed only onto the painted black center spokes and hub area. Soft detailing brushes work the cleaner into the crevices around the lug nuts, into the spoke valleys, and along the edges where the paint meets the polished lip. We're careful not to let the cleaner run onto the polished sections. Rinse thoroughly.

Stage 2: The polished lips. The bare aluminum lip gets cleaned with a dedicated aluminum-safe cleaner — a non-acidic, non-alkaline formula made specifically for uncoated metal. We apply it by hand with a soft microfiber, working around the lip section by section. For brake dust that's bonded to the aluminum, we use a clay bar with aluminum-safe lubricant — the same fine-grade clay we use on the paint, with even lighter pressure.

Stage 3: Polish and protect. After cleaning, we hand-polish the lips with a metal polish designed for aluminum. This removes light oxidation and surface haze and brings back the mirror-like machined finish. The polish is applied with a foam applicator and buffed off with a clean microfiber. Then we apply a thin coat of wheel wax — not a sealant, not a coating — that provides a protective barrier against brake dust and moisture without altering the look or trapping contaminants against the bare metal.

Each wheel takes about 25–30 minutes to do properly. On a modern car, wheels take 8–10 minutes. That's the difference.

The result

When a Fuchs wheel is properly polished, the lip has a specific finish — not chrome-mirror, not brushed, but a deep machined luster with visible turning marks from the original factory lathe cut. That texture is part of the design. Over-polishing smooths it out and makes the wheel look aftermarket. The goal is to restore clarity and reflectivity while preserving the factory machine marks. That's a judgment call you can only make by hand, not with a power tool.


Rubber & Seals 35 years of sun exposure

Window Seals, Weatherstripping, and Trim

A 1989 911 has rubber everywhere — window seals, door weatherstripping, rear engine grille seal, headlight surrounds, bumper trim inserts, antenna base, fuel filler gasket, targa bar seal (on Targa models), and dozens of smaller gaskets you don't see until you open every panel.

At 35+ years old, this rubber is not what it was when the car left Zuffenhausen. Miami's UV exposure accelerates rubber degradation even on garage-kept cars — every time the car goes out for a weekend drive, the seals take UV damage. Dried, cracked, or hardened rubber seals are one of the biggest cosmetic and functional issues on classic 911s. A cracked windshield seal lets water into the cabin. A hardened door seal lets wind noise in and lets the door rattle.

Our approach

We clean all rubber surfaces with a gentle, water-based rubber cleaner — no petroleum-based dressings, no silicone sprays, no tire shine products. Petroleum and silicone accelerate rubber deterioration over time by leaching out the natural plasticizers in the rubber compound. They make the seal look black and wet for a week, then leave it drier and more brittle than before.

After cleaning, we apply a dedicated rubber conditioner that contains UV inhibitors and is formulated to restore flexibility to aged rubber. It's absorbed into the rubber — not sitting on top of it. The seals won't look glossy or wet. They'll look clean, matte black, and properly maintained. More importantly, the conditioner slows the hardening process and extends the functional life of seals that Porsche no longer manufactures for some of these applications.

We also inspect every seal during the detail. If we find a seal that's cracked through, separated from the body, or hardened to the point where it's no longer making contact, we let the owner know. We can't fix it — that's a trim shop or a Porsche specialist job — but catching it during a detail prevents a water leak that could damage the interior or cause rust in the window frames.


Engine Bay Air-cooled, exposed, and delicate

The Air-Cooled Flat-Six

The engine bay on a rear-engined, air-cooled 911 is a completely different environment from a modern car's engine compartment. The 3.2-liter flat-six sits in the rear, exposed to road spray from behind, cooled by a large fan that pulls air through a grille and across the cylinder fins. There's no radiator. There's no enclosed, plastic-covered engine bay. The mechanical components — alternator, distributor, fuel injection system, coil, ignition wires, oil cooler lines — are exposed and accessible.

This means two things for detailing: there's more dirt and oil buildup because the engine isn't sealed off, and there's more risk of damage from cleaning because sensitive electrical and mechanical components are directly exposed.

What we don't do

We don't pressure wash an air-cooled engine bay. High-pressure water can force moisture into the distributor cap, behind the alternator bearings, into the fuel injection connectors, and under the valve cover gaskets. An air-cooled engine doesn't generate enough heat to quickly evaporate trapped water the way a modern water-cooled engine does. Moisture that gets behind a gasket or into an electrical connector can sit there for days in Miami's humidity, causing corrosion and starting problems.

What we actually do

We detail air-cooled engine bays by hand, section by section. We start by covering the distributor, alternator, and any exposed electrical connectors with plastic bags. Then we use a combination of low-pressure steam (not direct blast — diffused steam from a distance) and detail brushes with a gentle degreaser to clean each component individually. The fan shroud, the tin work around the cylinders, the valve covers, the oil filler neck, the coil bracket, the fuel lines — each piece gets cleaned with brushes and wiped by hand.

For oil residue and grease buildup around the engine case and the lower tin, we apply a citrus-based degreaser with a brush, let it dwell, and wipe it away with microfiber. No rinsing with water. Wipe-on, wipe-off. The engine bay gets cleaned without introducing any water to places where it doesn't belong.

After cleaning, we dress the rubber hoses and vacuum lines with the same UV-protective rubber conditioner we used on the exterior seals. The tin work and brackets get a light wipe of metal protectant. The result is an engine bay that looks maintained and correct — not wet and glossy like a show car, but clean and dry like a car that someone actually cares about.

Vintage Leather, Leatherette, and Plastics

The interior of a 1989 Carrera is a mix of materials: leather on the seat centers and bolsters (on leather-optioned cars), leatherette (a high-quality vinyl Porsche used on the seat sides, door cards, and dashboard), carpet, and hard plastics on the console, switches, and gauge surrounds. Each one has aged differently over 35 years, and each one needs a different approach.

The leather

Porsche leather from this era is a semi-aniline dye — thinner and more porous than the thick, heavily coated leather used in modern cars. It absorbs body oils, sweat, and conditioner differently. It also cracks differently. Modern leather cracks because the polyurethane topcoat fails. Vintage Porsche leather cracks because the hide itself dries out.

We clean it with a gentle leather cleaner and a natural-bristle brush, working in small sections. The brush agitates the cleaner into the grain without applying pressure that could tear weakened leather. On the driver's bolster — which on a well-used 911 shows the most wear because of the way you slide in past that high door sill — we work even more gently. If the leather is heavily worn or starting to crack in that area, aggressive cleaning can accelerate the damage.

After cleaning, we condition with a lanolin-based leather conditioner. Lanolin is a natural oil that mimics the lipids in animal hide. It absorbs slowly into the leather over 24 hours, restoring suppleness from within rather than sitting on the surface like a silicone-based product. We apply it, let it absorb, then buff off the excess. On a car this age, two conditioning sessions a year keeps the leather alive. More than that can over-saturate the hide and make it feel greasy.

The leatherette

Porsche's leatherette is a better vinyl than what most manufacturers use, but it's still vinyl — and vinyl in Miami's heat gets brittle, cracks, and fades. The dashboard is the most vulnerable surface because it takes direct sunlight through the windshield every time the car is parked outdoors.

We clean the leatherette and dashboard with a vinyl-specific cleaner (not the leather cleaner — different material, different pH, different needs) and protect it with a UV-inhibiting vinyl protectant that dries matte. No gloss. Gloss on a vintage Porsche dashboard looks wrong — it looks like Armor All, and every Porsche owner knows the difference. The protectant absorbs into the vinyl and creates a UV barrier that slows future cracking and fading without changing the factory matte appearance.

The gauges and switches

The 5-gauge cluster, the center console switches, the heater controls, the mirror adjustment knobs — these are all small, delicate components that can be scratched or damaged by careless cleaning. We use cotton swabs and detail brushes to clean around each gauge bezel, between the rocker switches, and in the grooves of the radio and climate controls. No spray-and-wipe. Every piece is cleaned individually by hand.

The gauge faces themselves get cleaned with a plastic-safe, anti-static cleaner applied to a microfiber cloth — never sprayed directly onto the gauge. Overspray getting behind the gauge lens causes fogging that's nearly impossible to remove without pulling the cluster.

A note on the headliner

The 1989 Carrera has a fabric headliner that's glued to a board. At 35 years old, the glue is often failing — especially in Miami's heat. The headliner may be sagging or starting to separate in spots. We do not steam clean or wet-clean a headliner in this condition. Introducing moisture or heat reactivates the old glue unevenly and makes the sagging worse. We vacuum it gently with a soft brush attachment. If it needs more than that, we refer the owner to an upholstery specialist who can properly re-glue or replace it.


Brightwork Chrome, anodized, stainless

The Chrome and Anodized Trim

The 1989 Carrera has a mix of exterior metal trim: the Porsche script on the rear, the Carrera badge, the mirror housings (on some models), the rain gutter trim, and various small pieces of stainless and anodized aluminum. Each piece gets cleaned and protected individually.

Chrome and stainless pieces get hand-polished with a chrome-specific metal polish that removes surface oxidation and road film. On a Miami car, salt air causes light pitting on chrome over time — we can't remove pitting (that's a re-chroming job), but we can clean it out and slow it down with a layer of protective wax applied to the chrome surfaces.

Anodized aluminum trim (like the window surrounds on some models) is treated differently — it gets cleaned with a non-abrasive cleaner only. You cannot polish anodized aluminum with a metal polish or you'll cut through the anodized layer and expose raw aluminum underneath, which then oxidizes rapidly and turns chalky white. We clean it, protect it with a UV wax, and leave the factory anodizing intact.

Every adjustment comes back to one principle: the materials on a 35-year-old car are irreplaceable. Modern clear coat can be corrected, resprayed, or ceramic-coated. A Fuchs wheel lip can be re-machined. But original single-stage paint, original leather, original rubber seals — once they're gone, they're gone. The goal is to preserve what's there, not transform it into something it's not.

Can you detail any air-cooled Porsche, not just the 3.2?

Yes. The process described here applies to all air-cooled 911s — the early long-hood models (1965–1973), the G-body impact bumper cars (1974–1989), and the 964 (1989–1994, which is technically air-cooled with some oil cooling). The 993 (1995–1998) is the last air-cooled generation and follows a very similar process. Each era has slightly different trim materials and paint chemistry, but the core principles — single-stage paint care, Fuchs wheel handling, air-cooled engine bay cleaning, and vintage interior treatment — carry across all of them.

How often should I detail a classic Porsche in Miami?

Why can't I use ceramic coating on my classic Porsche?
