Why It Matters

What Marine Detailing Actually Involves

Boat detailing isn't just a bigger car wash. The materials, the chemistry, and the environmental exposure are completely different β€” and so are the consequences of getting it wrong.

Most boat exteriors are gelcoat β€” a polyester resin surface layer that is far more porous and far more vulnerable to oxidation than automotive clear coat. Once gelcoat dulls and chalks, no amount of waxing brings it back; you need machine compounding to remove the oxidized layer and reveal fresh, glossy resin underneath. Above-the-waterline finishes also include painted topsides (Awlgrip, Awlcraft 2000), polished stainless rails and hardware, anodized aluminum, teak decks and toe rails, vinyl seating, and acrylic isinglass β€” every one of which requires different chemistry and a different protocol.

Miami doesn't just damage boats β€” it punishes them daily. UV, salt, humidity, and hard water work against your finish 24 hours a day, in or out of the slip.

South Florida marinas combine constant salt-laden humidity, hard-water deposits from afternoon thunderstorms, brutal UV that breaks down gelcoat at the molecular level, and exhaust soot that settles and bonds onto transoms and hardtops over time. Vessels left untreated for as little as 12 months show visible oxidation, hazing, water spotting, and stainless rust bleed that becomes progressively more expensive to reverse. Routine professional detailing is far cheaper than gelcoat restoration β€” and gelcoat restoration is far cheaper than topside repaint.

Our marine work uses only marine-rated chemistry: pH-balanced boat soaps, specialized gelcoat compounds and polishes (3M Marine, Presta, Meguiar's Marine), marine ceramic coatings rated for prolonged saltwater exposure, and stainless polishes designed for chrome and 316-grade marine hardware. We treat every boat as a working asset that needs to perform β€” not a showpiece that gets rinsed and forgotten.

Ale's team brought our 65' Azimut back from years of sun damage. The gelcoat looks like new β€” actually shines now instead of looking chalky. Marina staff at Miami Beach Marina say it's the cleanest boat on the dock.

Tournament season is brutal on a sport fish. Ale's crew handles our weekly wash, monthly compound, and annual ceramic. Boat is always tournament-ready and the team works around our charter calendar perfectly.

I had three other detailers tell me the oxidation on my hull was permanent and I'd need a repaint. Ale's team did a two-stage gelcoat reversal and the boat looks better than the day I bought it. Saved me $40K in topside paint.

How We Work

From Dock Walk-Through to Sea-Ready

A predictable, marina-friendly process that respects your boat, your dock neighbors, and your charter schedule.

01

Dock Walk-Through

We meet you at the slip, walk the vessel together, document existing condition, and confirm scope and timeline before any work begins.

02

Marina Coordination

We coordinate dock access and slip work directly with the harbormaster. Insurance certificate provided in advance with the marina listed as additionally insured if requested.

03

Self-Contained Setup

We bring our own freshwater, marine-rated chemistry, polishers, and inspection lighting. Where shore power is limited, we run on battery-powered equipment.

04

Marine-Specific Protocol

No silicone-based products that contaminate paint repairs. Acrylic-safe isinglass cleaners. Salt-water rinse before any compounding. Teak care with proper grain direction.

05

Final Walk-Through

We do a final inspection with you under daylight before sign-off. All hardware double-checked. Vessel ready for next departure or extended slip storage.

06

Recurring Schedule

Most owners move to recurring weekly washes plus quarterly details. We track your usage and weather windows and schedule around them.

FAQ

Yacht & Boat Detailing β€” Common Questions

Everything boat owners and captains ask before booking marine service.

How much does yacht detailing cost in Miami?
Marine detailing is priced per linear foot. Maintenance Wash starts at $8/ft. Premium Detail (with compound and wax) starts at $22/ft. Full Restoration with ceramic coating starts at $55/ft. Final pricing depends on vessel condition, hardware count, and access β€” we provide a firm quote after a dock walk-through. A standard 40' boat at the Premium tier runs around $880; a 60' yacht runs around $1,320. Restoration pricing scales similarly.
Are you insured for marine work?
Yes. We carry $2 million in commercial general liability with marine work coverage. We provide a Certificate of Insurance to your marina or harbormaster within 24 hours of booking, with the marina and vessel owner listed as additionally insured if requested. We've worked through compliance with most major South Florida marinas including Miami Beach Marina, Bahia Mar, Sunset Harbour, and Bal Harbour Yacht Club.
Which marinas do you service?
All major South Florida marinas including Miami Beach Marina, Sunset Harbour Yacht Club, Fisher Island Marina, Bal Harbour Yacht Club, Dinner Key Marina, Haulover Marina, and Bahia Mar / Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale. We also service private docks and residential canal homes.
What is gelcoat oxidation, and can it really be reversed?
Gelcoat is the polyester resin layer that forms the visible exterior of most fiberglass boats. UV and salt break down the surface molecules over time, creating that chalky, faded "old boat" look. Oxidation can absolutely be reversed β€” but not by waxing. It requires machine compounding to physically remove the oxidized resin layer and reveal fresh, glossy gelcoat underneath. Done right, a heavily oxidized hull can come back to near-new appearance. Done wrong, you can burn through the gelcoat permanently. This is why marine compounding is a specialty, not a generic skill.
Is ceramic coating worth it on a boat?
For boats stored in South Florida marinas β€” absolutely. Marine-rated ceramic coatings dramatically slow gelcoat oxidation, repel salt and hard water, prevent stainless rust bleed, and make routine washing far easier. A coated hull stays glossier 10x longer than waxed gelcoat under Miami sun. Coatings on properly prepped surfaces last 2–3 years with annual maintenance. For owners who don't want to redo wax every 2 months, ceramic is a meaningful upgrade.
Can you detail my boat in the water, or does it need to be hauled?
Above-the-waterline work β€” wash, compound, polish, ceramic, interior, hardware β€” is done in the water at your slip. Below-waterline (bottom paint, hull cleaning of growth) typically requires haul-out or in-water diver service depending on the marina's rules. We focus on above-the-waterline detailing and partner with bottom specialists when needed.
How long does marine detailing take?
A Maintenance Wash on a 40' boat takes 2–4 hours. A Premium Detail with compound and wax on the same boat takes 1–2 days. Full Restoration with two-stage gelcoat reversal and ceramic coating ranges from 3 days for a 35' center console to 6 days for a 60' yacht. We always quote a realistic window β€” gelcoat work is not something to rush.
Do you handle interior cabins, galleys, and heads?
Yes. Interior detailing is half the value on cruisers and yachts. We deep-clean leather and Ultraleather upholstery, sanitize galleys and heads, clean acrylic isinglass and salt-spotted glass, condition teak interior trim, treat carpets and rug runners with marine-safe shampoo, and address any odor issues from saltwater incursion or storage moisture. For owners chartering or selling, interior presentation often matters more than the topsides.
Do you offer fleet or charter contracts?
Yes. We work with charter operators, yacht management companies, dealership inventory programs, and multi-vessel private owners. Volume pricing, scheduled maintenance windows, monthly reporting, and consolidated billing are all available. See our fleet program details.
Will marine detailing damage my paint, hardware, or canvas?
Not when done correctly. We use marine-rated, paint-safe chemistry across the board β€” no silicone-based dressings that contaminate Awlgrip touch-ups, no acid-based cleaners that pit stainless, no abrasive products on canvas or non-skid. Every surface gets the right product. We measure twice and polish once, and we'll always give honest expectations on what compounding can and can't recover.
