How Hurricane Season Destroys Cars (And How to Stop It)

I've been detailing cars in Miami since 2019. That's six full hurricane seasons — Dorian's near-miss, Eta and Irma's flooding, Ian's outer bands, and every tropical storm in between. After every single one, my phone rings off the hook. And every time, the damage I'm cleaning up isn't what you'd expect.

Most people think hurricane damage means downed trees on your hood, broken windshields, or a flooded engine bay. That happens — but it's rare for most Miami residents, and insurance covers it. The damage I see on 90% of the cars I detail after a storm is different. It's subtle, invisible at first, and by the time the owner notices it, the repair bill is 5–10x what it would have cost to prevent.

Here are the things I've learned detailing cars through six Miami hurricane seasons that nobody talks about. Not the FEMA stuff. Not the boarding-up-your-windows stuff. The car stuff — what happens to your paint, your interior, your wheels, and your leather before, during, and after a tropical storm hits South Florida.


1 What I've learned

The Worst Damage Happens After the Storm, Not During It

Everyone obsesses over the wind and rain during the storm. They park in the garage, cover the car, wait it out. Then the storm passes, the sun comes back, and they think it's over.

It's not over. It's just starting.

After a hurricane or tropical storm, the air is saturated with salt. The storm surge and wind pulled millions of gallons of seawater into the atmosphere and deposited it across everything within miles of the coast. Your car is now coated in a film of saltwater residue — including cars that were parked in garages, because garage ventilation systems pulled in that salt-saturated air all night.

Then the Miami sun comes out. The humidity stays at 95%. And that salt film bakes onto your paint in 90°F+ heat with nowhere to evaporate because the humidity won't let it dry properly. Within 48–72 hours of a storm passing, the salt has bonded to your clear coat at a molecular level. A regular wash won't remove it. You need chemical decontamination — clay bar, iron remover, the full process.

"I've seen more salt-bonded paint damage in the 5 days after a hurricane than in the 5 months before it. The storm deposits the salt. The sun and humidity lock it in. And most people don't wash their car for a week because they're dealing with everything else."

The cars that come to me a week or two after a storm — the ones whose owners were busy with insurance, tree removal, power outages — those are the ones with the worst paint damage. Not because the storm hit them harder, but because nobody washed the salt off in time.

What to do within 48 hours of a storm

At minimum, rinse your car with clean water as soon as possible after the storm passes. Not a pressure wash — just a thorough rinse to remove surface salt before it bonds. If you can't get a professional detail right away, a simple rinse buys you time. But don't wait longer than 72 hours. After that, the salt is bonded and only a professional decontamination removes it without scratching.


2 What I've learned

Flood Water Gets Inside Cars That Never "Flooded"

Your car doesn't need to be submerged for water to get inside. After every major storm, I detail cars where the owner says "it didn't flood — the car was in the garage the whole time" and then I open the door and smell mildew.

Here's what happens: heavy rain drives water horizontally against doors, windows, and trunk seals at 60–100+ mph. Even well-maintained seals let small amounts of water through under that kind of pressure. The water seeps into door cavities, under the carpet padding, into the trunk lining, and down into the spare tire well. You can't see it because it's underneath the carpet, behind the door cards, and below the seat mounts.

In Miami's heat and humidity, that trapped water doesn't evaporate. It incubates. Within a week, you have mold growing in the carpet padding. Within two weeks, it's in the AC evaporator housing because mold spores circulate through the cabin air system every time you run the air. The car smells musty. The windows fog faster. And surface cleaning — vacuuming, Febreze, air fresheners — doesn't touch it because the mold is underneath the carpet, not on top of it.

The smell test: After any storm with heavy rain, open your car and just breathe. If it smells damp, musty, or "off" in any way — even faintly — you have moisture trapped somewhere. Don't wait for it to get worse. The earlier you extract it, the less damage it causes. Once mold establishes in the padding, you're looking at full carpet extraction or replacement.

The fix requires pulling the seats forward, extracting moisture from the carpet padding with a commercial-grade wet/dry extractor, steam-cleaning all surfaces at 200°F+ to kill mold spores, treating the AC system with an antimicrobial fogging treatment, and then running a dehumidifier in the cabin. This is a 3–4 hour job. Waiting until the mold is established turns it into a 6–8 hour job with possibly replacing the carpet padding entirely — a $500–$1,500 expense depending on the vehicle.


3 What I've learned

Tree Debris Does More Damage Than You Think

After a storm, there's organic debris everywhere — leaves, branches, seeds, flower petals, bark fragments. Most people brush the big stuff off and move on. What they don't realize is that the small stuff — the wet leaves, the crushed seed pods, the bark fragments sitting in the windshield cowl and door jambs — is actively damaging their paint.

Wet organic matter is acidic. Leaves produce tannic acid as they decompose. Tree sap that was shaken loose by the wind bonds to warm paint and hardens within hours. Flower pollen contains enzymes that etch clear coat when wet. And all of it is sitting on your car, trapped against the paint by moisture, decomposing in the heat.

The areas I see the most debris damage after storms: the windshield cowl (where leaves collect at the base of the windshield and trap moisture against the paint and wiper arms), the rain gutters along the roofline, door jambs where debris washes in with rain, and the rear window deck. These aren't areas most people think to clean — and they're exactly where organic etching happens because the debris sits longest.

The two-day leaf stain

A wet leaf sitting on dark paint in 90°F heat for 48 hours leaves a permanent tannic acid stain shaped exactly like the leaf. I've seen this dozens of times after storms. The outline is etched into the clear coat — it's not sitting on top. Removing it requires paint correction (machine polishing). A quick debris cleanup right after the storm prevents this entirely.


4 What I've learned

Your AC System Becomes a Mold Factory

This is the one that surprises people most. After a storm, even cars with zero water intrusion develop mold in the AC system within 1–2 weeks. Here's why.

Your AC evaporator (the cooling element behind the dashboard) naturally creates condensation when it runs — that's the water you see dripping under your car when you park. During a storm, the evaporator sits idle in a sealed housing full of moisture. The storm dumps humid air into the system through the cabin air intake. Mold spores from the outside environment — which are elevated after any storm because of all the disturbed vegetation — enter the system and settle on the wet evaporator core.

When you start your car after the storm and turn on the AC, you're blowing air across a surface that's been growing mold in the dark for days. That musty, "old sock" smell when you first run the AC after a storm? That's mold. And it's being distributed to every vent in the cabin.

For people with allergies, asthma, or kids who are sensitive to mold, this is a health issue — not just a smell issue. The fix is an antimicrobial treatment fogged through the AC intake while the system runs on recirculate. We do this as part of our post-storm interior protocol. It kills the mold at the evaporator core and throughout the duct system. Takes about 20 minutes and prevents weeks of musty AC.

Quick DIY prevention: After the storm passes, run your AC on MAX HEAT (not cold) with the windows open for 10–15 minutes. The heat dries out the evaporator core. Then switch to AC on recirculate for another 10 minutes. This doesn't kill existing mold, but it reduces moisture on the evaporator before mold establishes. It's not a substitute for professional treatment, but it buys time.


5 What I've learned

Car Covers Make Everything Worse

Every storm season, someone tells me they covered their car before the storm hit. And every time, the damage under the cover is worse than the car parked next to it with no cover at all.

Here's the problem: a car cover traps moisture between the cover fabric and the paint. During and after the storm, that space fills with humid air, condensation, and whatever debris blew in before the cover sealed. The cover keeps the surface wet — preventing the paint from ever drying naturally. Salt, sand, dirt, and organic debris get sandwiched between the fabric and the paint. And then every gust of wind moves the cover back and forth across the surface, dragging all that trapped debris across your clear coat like sandpaper.

I've detailed cars that had perfect paint except for a grid pattern of micro-scratches exactly matching the weave of the car cover. The wind didn't damage the paint. The cover did — by grinding salt and sand particles across the surface for 12 straight hours.

"The best car cover during a hurricane is your garage. The second best is nothing at all. An actual car cover is the worst option because it traps debris against paint and grinds it in."

If you don't have a garage, park on the leeward side of your building (away from the direction the wind is coming from) and leave the car uncovered. It'll get wet and dirty, but it won't get scratched by its own cover. Wash it within 48 hours after the storm and the salt comes off clean.


6 What I've learned

The Power Outage Kills Your Interior

This one is indirect, but I see it every season. The storm knocks out power for 2–5 days. During those days, your garage has no ventilation fans, no dehumidifiers, nothing controlling the climate. Your car sits in a hot, humid, completely stagnant box. The temperature in a closed garage without power in Miami in August can hit 110–120°F with 90%+ humidity.

In those conditions, leather dries out and cracks faster in 3 days than it would in 3 months of normal use. Dashboard plastics off-gas at an accelerated rate, leaving the interior film on glass I mentioned earlier. Rubber seals absorb moisture and swell, then crack when they dry. And the cabin air — trapped with no circulation — becomes a breeding ground for mold, bacteria, and musty odor.

Clients who come to me after a multi-day power outage almost always need full interior steam cleaning plus leather conditioning. The cars that were driven daily during the outage (and thus had their AC systems cycling air) fare much better than the ones that sat sealed in a powerless garage.

What to do during a power outage

If it's safe, crack your car windows about half an inch to let air circulate through the cabin. This prevents the sealed-box effect that accelerates interior damage. If you can start the car, run the AC for 15–20 minutes once a day to cycle the cabin air and dehumidify the interior. And leave the garage door cracked if your neighborhood is safe — any airflow reduces humidity.


7 What I've learned

A Detail Before Storm Season Is Worth Three After

The single best thing I tell clients every May: get a detail before hurricane season starts. Not because I want the business (I'm booked solid after every storm anyway). Because a car with fresh sealant — or better yet, a ceramic coating — handles storm exposure dramatically better than an unprotected car.

Sealant creates a hydrophobic barrier that prevents salt from bonding directly to your clear coat. Instead of etching into the paint, salt sits on top of the sealant and rinses off with clean water. The same storm salt that causes $400 worth of paint correction on an unprotected car rinses off in 10 minutes on a sealed car.

Ceramic coating takes this further — it's a semi-permanent barrier that survives multiple storms without reapplication. A ceramic-coated car can sit for a week after a hurricane and the salt still rinses off clean because it can't bond to the ceramic surface the way it bonds to unprotected clear coat.

The pre-season detail checklist

What I recommend every client do before June 1 (the official start of Atlantic hurricane season):

  • Full exterior detail with sealant — at minimum. This is your first line of defense against salt exposure. Our exterior detail ($250) includes clay bar decontamination, iron removal, and a 3-month sealant that covers you through the most active months (August–October).
  • Interior steam clean — kill any existing mold spores and bacteria in the cabin before storm humidity amplifies them. Clean the AC system. Condition the leather so it's moisturized going into the hot season.
  • Rubber seal conditioning — treated seals are more flexible and form a tighter seal against wind-driven rain. Dried, cracked seals let water in.
  • Consider ceramic coating — if you live in Sunny Isles, Aventura, Miami Beach, Bal Harbour, or anywhere oceanfront, ceramic coating is the best storm-season investment. You apply it once and it protects through the entire season without reapplication.
  • Keep a 5-gallon jug of clean water in the garage — if the storm hits and water service is disrupted, you can still do a quick rinse within 48 hours. Even a bucket rinse prevents salt bonding.

My Post-Storm Detail Protocol — What I Do on Every Car

When a client calls me after a hurricane or tropical storm, here's my exact process. This is different from a regular detail because the priorities shift — salt removal and moisture extraction come first, ahead of cosmetic finishing.

Step 1: Full rinse before touching the paint. I rinse every surface thoroughly with clean, filtered water to remove as much loose salt, sand, and debris as possible before any contact. No mitt, no soap yet — just water. This prevents grinding salt crystals into the paint during the wash.

Step 2: Foam bath with extended dwell. Heavy foam application that dwells for 5+ minutes (longer than a normal detail). The foam encapsulates bonded salt and debris and begins lifting it chemically before I physically touch the surface.

Step 3: Two-bucket wash with extra mitt rinsing. Post-storm cars have more abrasive contamination on the surface than a typical dirty car. I rinse the mitt twice as often — every single pass — to prevent cross-contamination.

Step 4: Full decontamination. Iron remover on every panel (storm runoff carries heavy metallic contamination from roads, construction sites, and infrastructure). Clay bar every surface. Tar remover on lower panels where road debris accumulates.

Step 5: Interior moisture check. I pull up floor mats, check under seats, inspect the trunk well, and smell the AC vents. If there's any moisture, I extract it immediately with a commercial wet/dry extractor and steam clean the affected areas. If the AC smells musty, I fog the system with antimicrobial treatment.

Step 6: Fresh sealant. Any existing sealant has been compromised by the storm exposure. I apply fresh sealant to every panel so the car is protected going forward.

This process takes 5–7 hours depending on the car's condition. It's longer than a standard detail, but it addresses everything the storm did — visible and invisible.


Common Questions

How soon after a hurricane should I detail my car?

As soon as possible — ideally within 48 hours. At minimum, rinse the car with clean water within 48 hours to remove surface salt before it bonds. A full professional detail within the first week prevents the vast majority of post-storm damage. After 7–10 days, salt bonding and organic etching become more difficult (and expensive) to remove.

My car was in a covered garage during the storm. Does it still need a post-storm detail?

Yes. Garage ventilation systems pull in outside air, and that air was heavily salt-saturated during and after the storm. Your car has a salt film on it even if it stayed dry. Additionally, humidity in the garage was likely elevated for days, which means your interior absorbed moisture. A post-storm detail addresses both the exterior salt and interior humidity issues.

My car smells musty after the storm but looks fine. Is that a problem?

Yes — the smell means moisture is trapped somewhere. Most likely in the carpet padding, the trunk lining, or the AC evaporator housing. Surface cleaning won't fix it. You need professional moisture extraction, steam cleaning, and likely an AC antimicrobial treatment. The sooner you address it, the less it costs. Mold that's been growing for 2 weeks is significantly harder to eliminate than mold caught in the first 3–5 days.

Does ceramic coating protect against hurricane damage?

It protects against the most common type of hurricane damage — salt bonding to paint. Salt sits on top of the ceramic surface instead of etching into the clear coat, and rinses off with clean water even days after the storm. Ceramic coating doesn't protect against physical impacts (flying debris, fallen trees) or flooding. Should I cover my car during a hurricane?

No. Car covers trap salt, sand, and moisture against the paint and create more damage than they prevent. The wind movement during the storm grinds trapped debris into your clear coat. Park in a garage if possible. If not, park on the leeward side of your building and leave the car uncovered. Wash it within 48 hours after the storm passes.

How much does a post-hurricane detail cost?

It depends on the car's condition. A car that was rinsed within 48 hours and has no interior moisture typically costs the same as a standard Premium Full Detail ($449). Cars with bonded salt damage requiring extra decontamination or interior moisture extraction may need additional work.
